Experiences from a Combined Statics and Dynamics Course in an Integrated Lecture - Lab Environment

Tanya Kunberger, Kristine Csavina

Abstract

Engineering Statics and Dynamics are offered in a combined Engineering Mechanics course and taught in an integrated lecture – lab environment at Florida Gulf Coast University.  This 4-credit hour, 5 – contact hour course meets twice a week for two hours and forty-five minutes each time.  In order to maintain a high level of engagement, the instructors have interspersed worksheets and hands-on activities with the traditional lecture components of the course.  Details on course development, evolution, outcomes and assessment are presented and discussed.  Both students and instructors’ thoughts are presented.  Feedback from students indicates a positive response to the class format, much of which can be tailored to courses outside the discipline or the lecture – lab environment.
