Author Guidelines

New submissions are not being accepted.
Papers should be a maximum of 20 pages, double-spaced, 12 point font minimum. Each paper should contain:
  1. A descriptive title capturing the essence of the practice (to be entered as metadata also when submitting the paper).
  2. A self-contained abstract of the paper (to be entered as metadata also when submitting the paper).
  3. Three to five keywords that best describe the theme of the article (to be entered as metadata also when submitting the paper).
  4. A Background/Introduction section describing in detail the setting/scenario for the practice presented in the paper. For example, details of the class, relevant student demographics, class size, and all other relevant information on the setting where the practice occurred.
  5. A Rationale/Need section describing the rationale/need for the practice presented in the paper.
  6. A detailed Description of the Practice. Authors should provide enough detail in this section so that other engineering faculty interested in adopting the practice in their own classes should be able to do so. More detail for this section is better than less detail. Authors should include details on how the practice was designed and structured, how the practice was implemented in the classroom. Authors can also include any supplemental materials such as questionnaires, surveys, etc. that go with the practice.
  7. Any Assessment of the Practice. Authors are encouraged to report results and evidence from implementing their practice. Because a goal of the journal is to encourage creation and sharing of best practices, any evidence that a certain practice worked or did not work is strongly encouraged so that other faculty can try the practice and strengthen the practice through feedback. Please note that results need not always be positive and support the practice. Negative conclusions, when well supported, are also encouraged so educators know what does not work or can attempt to fix what went wrong.
  8. Author reflections/discussion/evaluation of their practice. As a final conclusion section, authors are encouraged to reflect on their practice (whether successful or not), and provide additional insights about how they may change or improve their practice if needed.
  9. A comprehensive literature review section is not required. Because a goal of the journal is to encourage sharing of the wisdom in instructional practice, and because good practice that works may not always be steeped in theory, a comprehensive review of the research literature is not needed. Only essential references to help demonstrate the Engineering that the author used to develop the application/practice being described is required. References should be in Harvard format.
Papers will be peer-reviewed before publication. Authors should also note that once their paper is published, their papers would be open to moderated comments from readers of the journal so authors can obtain feedback on their practices.
Once manuscripts are accepted for publication, the layout department of the journal will request original, high quality drawings, artwork, and equations suitable for online publishing. Please only use Equation Editor or Mathtype to type equations in the paper; please do not use Microsoft Word drawing objects in the paper; instead please generate figures (in one of the standard figure formats such as JPEG, PNG, etc.)

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).

  2. The submission file is in Microsoft Word, RTF, or PDF document file format. All equations (inline display and separate equations) have been typed in equation editor or Mathtype. All artwork and drawings have been prepared in standard figure formats (such as JPEG, PNG, etc.) and not as MS Word drawing objects.
  3. The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  4. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
