Focus and Scope

The focus and scope will be changing soon. At the present time, no new submissions are being accepted.

The International Journal of Applications and Practices in Engineering Education is an online, peer reviewed, open access journal for the dissemination of applications and practices (the ones the work and the ones that don't) used by engineering education practitioners in their classrooms and beyond. Papers from practices in all points in the engineering and technology student pipeline, including K-12, Undergraduate Education, Graduate Education, and after engineering and technology graduates enter the Professional Workforce are welcome. Papers from all engineering and technology disciplines are welcome.

Once published, papers will be subjected to moderated discussions and commenting from the journal readership so the engineering education community will formulate and define best practices through continual vetting of ideas.

The major aims of the International Journal of Applications and Practices in Engineering Education are:

1. To provide an international, peer-reviewed forum for exchange and sharing of instructional applications and practices among engineering educators from all engineering disciplines;

2. To provide an open access forum for engineering educators to share their successes and struggles in practicing their craft of educating engineers, (what was done, for what purpose, with what outcome); The goal is to create shared understanding of successful strategies to overcome struggles.

3. To promote bridging of engineering education theory and practice, but approaching the problem primarily from a practitioner’s perspective, whether or not a practice fits with known theory.

4. To ultimately improve engineering educators’ practice.

The journal will publish original articles about engineering education applications and practice in the following areas:

Classroom Practices: Papers in this section will typically present practices used by engineering educators in a classroom setting. For example, a particular way of asking questions in the classroom, or a unique method of discussion in the classroom.?Informal Practices Outside the Classroom: This section will publish papers on practices engineering educators use outside the classroom. For example, a unique homework policy, or a new way of incorporating field experiences for engineering students.

Assessment of Practices: This section will specially focus on novel assessment tools and techniques to assess the effectiveness of a certain practice. For example, a new survey to quickly assess how well a discussion went in a classroom, or a new interactive format for keeping an electronic diary of student reflections about a certain practice.

Technology and Engineering Education Practice: Papers published in this section will detail the use of technology in furthering the effectiveness of the practice of engineering educators. For example, enhancement of student collaboration using wiki tools, or scaffolding using software tools.

Faculty Development Activities for Improvement of Practice: This section will provide engineering faculty an opportunity to write about any unique professional development efforts they were part of, especially for improving their instructional practice.

Industry Perspectives: This section will publish papers from industry practitioners who may be able to contribute to improving engineering instructional practice.

Student Perspectives: The editors and editorial board will invite papers from student authors to provide student perspectives on the practices and instructional efforts of engineering educators. This will be important for evaluating the effectiveness of practices.

Applications of Education Theory: Papers that illustrate applications of widely accepted learning theory in engineering education/education will be published in this section. Software applications developed using accepted learning theories and principles will also be published in this section.

Peer Review Process

The language of the journal is English. Interested authors should submit their manuscript for review online, after registration in the online system. Manuscripts should be prepared in accordance with Authors guide. All technical submissions will be reviewed by at least two referees to provide an objective evaluation.

Manuscripts will be judged based on the following criteria:
A. Does the manuscript present a practice that is unique, new and significant? Authors should note that uniqueness, newness, and significance of their practice can be demonstrated in different ways:
  1. An author may write about an entirely new practice (e.g. when Podcasting was introduced, the platform for delivering content was new) that can benefit all engineering educators and impact student learning significantly.
  2. An author may have modified an exisiting pedagogical approach or tool (such as Classroom Discussions), but for unique purposes (such as structuring discussions for an industry audience that does not value theoretical knowledge).
  3. Significance of a practice comes from the potential impact of the practice. Characteristics of the target audience impacted, potential for changing the way a concept is traditionally taught, etc., are some ways to demonstrate significance of the practice.
B. Does the manuscript present a portable practice?

A goal of the journal is to share good engineering education practices. Therefore, authors should strive to increase the portability and replicability of the practices they report, so that the engineering educator community can try the practices and provide feedback on successes (or struggles).
Manuscripts will be reviewed promptly and scheduled for publication as soon as possible. The journal emphasizes documentation of engineering educators' practice. Authors should also note that once their paper is published, their papers will be open to moderated comments from readers of the journal so authors can obtain feedback on their practices. Authors are encouraged to contact the editors if they have questions about the suitability of their paper for the journal.

Publication Frequency

The journal is published twice every year with issues in Summer (July) and Fall (December).

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.
